Our first week

We have done a variety of things here in our first week.  George helped move a play structure one day, and then started working on replacing the shut off valves and check valves for the fresh water supply at all the houses.  There about 25 homes here at the campus.  I have offered to do some baking for the morning coffee breaks, probably 3 times a week.  Also am doing some cleaning in the Fellowship Hall.  I think we'll be kept busy for the next few weeks.

 This is the typical landscape around here.  The shrubs are mesquite bushes, that are not native to Arizona, but came up with the cattle from Mexico years ago. 

On Friday we drove to Tombstone to look around.  A very typical old Western tourist town.  Apparently there was a shoot-out happening on the street at 11:00.  

On Saturday we went out for breakfast in Elfrida, which is 6 miles from here. After that we drove to Chiricahua National Monument, Land of Standing up Rocks. 

 We hiked in 2 different places, the first down in among the rocks, and the second hike, up onto Sugarloaf Mountain, at 7310 feet, up from the parking lot which is at 6840 feet.  I thought it was a good walk!  Also hiked through snow and ice on the way up, which made it a little treacherous, and reminded us of home!

After that, because the day was still young, we drove to Bisbee.  We stopped at a lookout overlooking a huge open pit mine.  There used to be a copper mine here, and there are tours available to go into the mine.  Maybe some other time...!
 
Today we went to church in Elfrida, then back to Bisbee to walk around in the historic part of town.  Many antique ( junk) stores, artsy things, a quilt shop that is closing, and finally in the new part of town, a Safeway for a few groceries.
