On Friday morning, George and I were able to go flying with Larry Dye. This Cessna 185 could tell many stories of flying missionaries on the mission field in Venezuela. I'm sure the most amazing one would be the time when Larry's dad, Paul Dye, was taken hostage by guerrillas and forced to fly them to their camp, then was held there for 4 days. He managed to sneak away at night, found the airplane in the dark, and flew to safety. Definitely a miracle escape!
Before he started the engine, Larry prayed and committed the flight to the Lord.
We have flown in small airplanes before, but always on the prairies. This was really exciting!
This is a one way mountain airstrip, 900 feet long. At the beginning of it, is a ravine/canyon, so if he touches down too soon, he'll break his landing gear off. At the end is another ravine, so he needs to be stopped before that.
Castle rock.
A pecan orchard.
Irrigation pivots.
The "base" as we were coming in to land.
On Saturday we went to Bisbee and toured the old copper mine. It's been closed for many years now.
